"Settling In" for Baby & Parents

Baby Becomes More Predictable

Baby and parent understand one another better these days!

  • Mother brings crying baby toward the breast--and baby calms, anticipating what's next.

  • Eating and sleeping are now more predictable.

  • Parents can spot and respond to early signs of over-stimulation.

Maturing Sleep Patterns

Appreciate baby's increasing melatonin levels, which help baby distinguish day from night.

  • Establish a nighttime routine in quiet sleeping location (not family room).

  • Watch for Light Sleep and see if baby will resettle herself.

Breastfeeding tips

Adding solid food DOES NOT increase nighttime sleep.

  • Beginning solids early causes an inflammatory reaction in baby's gut.

  • Observe cues of baby being finished eating: baby looks distracted and/or slows down eating.

  • Explore ways to comfort baby other than the breast.
